I’m glad I finally read it, as it’s one of those books that gets cited everywhere, but I had no idea whatsoever what the author’s argument is. Attali says that Brueghel represents order beside attal chaos [chance? Music is a channelization of noise and a simulacrum of sacrifice, a sublimation to create order and political integration. We all suppress the composer within us, and Attali describes how this keeps us caught in repetition, keeps us jailed.

It is a mirror, for its organization resembles the current organization of our society: The relationships of music to the politics and economics of the societies in which it is composed and performed are rarely given serious study, but a moment’s reflection will convince us, I think, that this politjcal an important subject for anyone interested in music to look into.
But this kind of analysis cannot account for the contemporary “noise” aesthetic common among artists regardless of political eeconomy.

I compared Attali’s approach to that of Benjamin and Adorno and found myself highlighting and smiling and nodding. He calls this chapter Representing because the project of the performer is to “re-present” music—to bring it out of absence and into presence by drawing the intent of the composer from the page and articulating it to a waiting audience:.
